Ordinarily when employees are properly doing the job they were hired to do praise isn't necessary, but given the animosity some police officers hold toward the public, it doesn't hurt to tell an officer that their efforts are appreciated. However, an officer that attempts to stop an officer's illegal conduct or submits a report will often cause that officer to be branded a departmental pariah. I had to report a Lieutenant's grossly illegal behavior while on duty which caused him to be fired. I became a pariah. Veiled threats and some not so veiled were made because he was well liked by a certain segment of the department. When anyone takes an oath it must be honored for there is no in between. The lady officer did right.

I believe you should definitely compliment that female sgt for her professionalism just don’t say you’re thanking her for not backing the blue. It could be used against her by her colleagues with retaliation. The male sgt could try to make himself a victim saying “see she’s not backing the blue.” This would go against your good intentions towards the female sgt. No one, however, can take issue with a compliment of professionalism and public appreciation which could be used discipline that male sgt.

I believe you give credit where it is due. It could encorage other cops to do the right thing also and eventually the numbers might grow. Setting good examples goes a long way to reform . .

I agree the white female sergeant and the white male officer honored their oath of office by stood up to the tyrant setting him straight. because they are starting to hold officers liable for not preventing and conspiring a unlawful act against another man or woman. it's my personal belief there is bad blood within the department. the State actor made it personal by operating outside is authority. he should be investigated by a outside agency like the local sheriff's department or the FBI or both into his background as a PEACE officer. He's a very dangerous and corrupt State actor.
